If you have been anywhere near Nigerian business conversations lately, you have probably heard the question: “Are you buying Dangote Refinery shares?”

A friend is asking how to buy. Someone on WhatsApp is talking about the IPO. Another person wants to know, “How much do I need to start?”

For anyone who has never invested in shares before, the excitement can be a little confusing. What exactly are you buying? How can you make money from it? And is this really an opportunity for the average Nigerian?

Let’s start with the basics.

You Are Buying a Piece of the Business

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE is offering part ownership of the business to investors through an Initial Public Offering (IPO).

An IPO is simply when a company offers its shares to the public for the first time. A share represents a small unit of ownership in a company.

The Dangote Refinery IPO is offering 4.1 billion shares at N525 per share, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares, costing N5,250. The offer is targeting approximately N2.15 trillion if fully subscribed.

That means you do not need millions of naira to become a shareholder.

Why Is Everyone Interested?

The attraction starts with the business itself.

The Dangote Refinery is already operating in Lagos, producing products including petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and petrochemicals. The refinery has a stated capacity of around 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, with production having been tested at higher levels.

There is more to the story than what the refinery is doing today.

Dangote has announced plans to expand capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day, creating the potential for a much larger business in the years ahead.

The financial performance is another reason investors are paying attention. The refinery reported approximately $1.82 billion in profit after tax in the first half of 2026, compared with a $476 million loss for the whole of 2025.

For an investor, that makes the story worth looking at. You are considering a stake in an operating business with significant scale, current revenue and ambitious growth plans.

Can N5,250 Make You Rich?

This is where we need to be realistic.

If you buy 10 shares for N5,250 and the share price eventually rises by 20%, your investment would be worth N6,300. That is a gain of N1,050.

Invest N525,000 under the same 20% increase and the gain would be N105,000.

The percentage is the same. The amount invested is different.

The N5,250 minimum makes investing more accessible. It does not make the investment a shortcut to becoming a millionaire.

Shares can also fall. A 20% decline would mean a corresponding reduction in the value of your investment. There is no guaranteed return.

So, Should You Buy?

There is no universal yes or no.

The better question is whether the investment fits your financial goals, how much you can comfortably invest, how long you are prepared to remain invested and how much risk you can accept.

Read the prospectus. Understand the business and the offer terms. Do not invest money needed for rent, school fees, emergencies or everyday expenses simply because everyone is talking about the IPO.

The Dangote Refinery IPO could be an opportunity to participate in one of Nigeria’s most significant industrial businesses. It could also introduce a new generation of Nigerians to investing in the capital market.

If you decide it fits your investment goals, Norrenberger Securities can help you access the Nigerian capital market and navigate the investment process with the right information and guidance.

Investing is not about finding one stock that will make you rich overnight.

It is about understanding what you own, investing what you can afford and giving your money the opportunity to grow over time.

Your first share may not make you a millionaire. It could, however, be the beginning of your journey as an investor.
