In finance, we often measure the value of an investment by its returns. We look at what it earns, how much it grows and the opportunities it creates over time.

Some of the most meaningful investments, however, cannot be measured in financial terms.

What is the value of a girl who gets to finish school, choose her career, discover what she loves and decide the kind of life she wants to live? What is the return on giving her the freedom to be a child and the opportunity to shape her own future?

For millions of girls around the world, that freedom remains out of reach.

UNICEF estimates that approximately 650 million women and girls alive today were married before their 18th birthday. Every year, an estimated 12 million girls enter marriage before adulthood. In Nigeria, the 2024 Demographic and Health Survey found that 33.4% of young women had married before the age of 18. That is roughly one in three.

Behind every statistic is a girl whose education may be interrupted, whose choices may be restricted and whose future may be decided before she has had the chance to imagine it for herself.

Child marriage can expose girls to early pregnancy, health risks, social isolation and reduced opportunities to complete their education. Its effects can extend into adulthood, influencing their economic independence and the choices available to them. Ending child marriage is therefore not simply about preventing early unions. It is about protecting a girl’s right to grow, learn and decide what her future should look like.

The 2026 International Day of the Girl Child theme, “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights,” calls for deliberate action to protect girls’ childhoods, expand their opportunities and respect their right to make decisions about their lives.

Investing in a girl means more than paying her school fees, important as education is. It means creating an environment where she can learn without fear, express her opinions without being dismissed and pursue her ambitions without being told that certain dreams are not meant for her. It means allowing her to explore her interests, develop her abilities and make choices as she grows.

A girl who dreams of becoming a doctor should have the opportunity to pursue medicine. A girl who wants to build a business should be encouraged to explore that ambition. Another may discover a completely different passion along the way. Every girl deserves the freedom to find out what is possible for her, rather than having her future decided before she is ready.

As a financial services group, Norrenberger understands the importance of investing today to create opportunities for tomorrow. We also recognise that progress cannot be measured in financial terms alone. A society’s future depends, in part, on the opportunities it creates for its girls to learn, grow and thrive.

Norrenberger stands with the call to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights. We believe every girl deserves the opportunity to complete her education, discover her potential and decide who she wants to become.

Not every investment needs a financial return. Some investments should simply give a girl the freedom to choose her future.

This International Day of the Girl Child, let us protect her childhood, respect her voice and invest in her right to choose.

Because her future should be hers to decide.
